Latin Introductory Phrases: Lesson 3

Time to return to our Latin speaking Odyssey. Say:

1 translation: I speak Latin.

Let’s get into the realm of you.

The Latin word for you is tu.

It’s like in all other languages that come from or are related to Latin. If you are interested, it is tu in French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and even Lithuanian and it’s very close in a bunch of other languages, for example, it’s du in German or thou in Old English or ty in Polish and... Well, you get the point. Now, let’s learn to talk about you:

Latin word for you say is dicis.

How do you say:

2 translation: You say it.

Now, remember, that to say or to speak is the same in Latin. So, how do you say:

3 translation: You speak Latin.

Did you remember that there is a difference between "you speak Latin" and "Latin speaks you" and therefore Latin is accusative? I hope you did.

Okay. Let’s get distracted for a moment.

Latin for I read is lego.

Guess how to say:

4 translation: You read.

Okay, now, say:

5 translation: You read it but I don’t read it.

Okay. Now, if you want to ask questions, you can do that in no time.

To ask questions, just add ne to the end of the first word of the phrase.

Also, there is another important thing about asking questions:

When you ask questions, you no longer put the verb in the end!

So, it’s like in English in some sense. You say is it instead of it is or, in Latin, you say say you? instead of you say.

And by the way, another thing, which we are going to practice till the end of the lesson: let’s omit ego, tu and id (because it’s clear who/what we are speaking about from the word ending), ask:

6 translation: Do you read?

What about:

7 translation: Do you speak?

Now say:

8 translation: You speak Latin.

And a) put dicis in the beginning b) add ne to the first word to ask:

9 translation: Do you speak Latin?

Okay, that was fast.
