Introduction to Lithuanian Topic- Participles:
Lesson 1

By Linas

This is a short course in Lithuanian, serving to introduce you to the very basics of participles (dalyviai, padalyviai, pusdalyviai). A shout out goes to Yorck for inspiring this course!

This course assumes you already have some understanding of how verbs work in Lithuanian. Check out the previous courses we have in Lithuanian if you don’t - that might help!

Let’s start with a simple verb. Or, rather, a simple noun leading to that verb.

How do you say?

a head

Answer: galva
Not correct. Please try again.

And now we use that to derive "to think":

to think

Answer: galvoti
Not correct. Please try again.

Excellent. Now make sure you know all the basic forms. What is "she thinks":

she thinks

Answer: ji galvoja
Not correct. Please try again.

And what about "they thought" (the verb is the same as in "he/she thought")?

they thought

Answer: jie galvojo
Not correct. Please try again.

Alright then, so we have galvoti - galvoja - galvojo.

Just to make sure we have enough of a choice of words, let’s also get the three basic forms of to have.

to have

Answer: turėti
Not correct. Please try again.

she has

Answer: ji turi
Not correct. Please try again.

she had

Answer: ji turėjo
Not correct. Please try again.

So turėti, turi, turėjo.

And finally: to eat.

to eat

Answer: valgyti
Not correct. Please try again.

he eats

Answer: jis valgo
Not correct. Please try again.

she ate

Answer: ji valgė
Not correct. Please try again.

Okay, so we have valgyti - valgo - valgė.

Let’s get down to business.
