Introduction to Spanish:
Lesson 2

By Linas

Spanish for I speak is hablo.

The letter h is silent (the letter h is always silent in Spanish so they don’t really need it even though they do still have it).

The I form loves the ending o. The word soy is one of the very rear exceptions.

Spanish for but is pero.

How would you say:

I speak Spanish but I do not speak Italian.

Answer: Hablo español pero no hablo italiano.
Not correct. Please try again.

I do not speak Spanish.

Answer: No hablo Español.

Spanish for why is por qué.

It consists of the words por and qué which actually mean for what and hence why.

Spanish for you speak is hablas.

The tu form loves the ending s.

Try saying (you are saying: why you not speak Spanish):

Why don’t you speak Spanish?

Answer: ¿Por qué no hablas español?
Not correct. Please try again.

Actually porque also means for that or because because que not only means what but it also means that.

Say:

I do not speak Spanish because I am not Spanish.

Answer: No hablo español porque no soy español.
Not correct. Please try again.

Again:

I do not speak Spanish because I am American.

Answer: No hablo español porque soy americano.
Not correct. Please try again.

Spanish for where is dónde.

Spanish for from is de.

If you want to ask where somebody is from, you ask where from are you. How do you say that?

Where are you from?

Answer: ¿De dónde eres?
Not correct. Please try again.

You could answer that by saying soy de insertyourcountriesnamehere or you could say for example soy americano or whatever.

To make a word into feminine, you add a.

You say americano, portugues (for Portuguese), español and so on only if you are a man. If you are woman, you add a.

Since americano has o which shows masculinity, it gets rid of that o before adding an a. It always does. How would you say as a woman:

I am American.

Answer: Soy americana.
Not correct. Please try again.

What about saying to a woman:

You are Spanish.

Answer: Eres española.
Not correct. Please try again.

Finally, let’s talk about how you say he speaks. When you have the tu form which is habla in this case, you just remove the s from the end. How would you say:

Pablo speaks Spanish.

Answer: Pablo habla español.
Not correct. Please try again.
