Introduction to Spanish:
Lesson 5

By Linas

Spanish for hi is hola.

You don’t pronounce that h so you get ola.

We need to learn to say two more things.

Spanish for I study is estudio.

It is just like the English word but it has that o which the I form loves and also it has an e in the beginning because Spanish doesn’t like to have two consonants (st) in the beginning of a word so it adds a vowel to make it easier to pronounce.

I don’t study.

Answer: No estudio.
Not correct. Please try again.

Similarily, you simply change that o to as to get the form for tu. Say:

You study.

Answer: Estudias.
Not correct. Please try again.

You remember the Spanish word for what from the phrase for what which is why. What is what:

What

Answer: Qué
Not correct. Please try again.

So you can ask:

What do you study?

Answer: ¿Qué estudias?
Not correct. Please try again.

You have already answered that. Or you can answer estudio something. It is pretty easy to guess the names for the subjects you study in Spanish and if you can’t guess it, you can say it in English and you are likely to be understood.

The same case with study just different words:

Spanish for I work is trabajo.

The letter j is pronounced like kh in Bach. Get some audio and listen to it a few times. It’s not hard to get, though.

This is the same, accidentally, as the word for work because it’s also trabajo. It also works just like estudio by changing that o to as. So how would you say:

You work.

Answer: Trabajas.
Not correct. Please try again.

Here's the best way to ask what ones profession is: you can say (knowing that the word for as in this case is the same as that for of or from):

As what do you work?

Answer: ¿De qué trabajas?
Not correct. Please try again.

Works like a charm.

The word cómo for how can also be used as the word for as so you may say I work as... and then tell your profession which you can look up in a dictionary or guess or say in English or whatever. How do you say:

I work as...

Answer: Trabajo cómo...
Not correct. Please try again.

Spanish for and is y.

Say:

I work and study.

Answer: Trabajo y estudio.
Not correct. Please try again.

So, you can do that already. Good work.

Let’s have a conversation to show what we have learnt in this very short course. You will need one more word to make it so here it is:

Spanish for anyway is de todos modos.

Literally it means of all modes. It is a bit beyond the scope of our lesson but that’s okay. Just for effect.

And here we start:

Hi!

Answer: Hola!
Not correct. Please try again.

Hi! How are you?

Answer: Hola! ¿Cómo estás?
Not correct. Please try again.

I am fine. Where are you from?

Answer: Estoy bien. ¿De dónde eres?
Not correct. Please try again.

I am Spanish. And you?

Answer: Soy español. Y tu?
Not correct. Please try again.

I am American.

Answer: Soy americano.
Not correct. Please try again.

Do you speak Spanish?

Answer: ¿Hablas español?
Not correct. Please try again.

I speak Spanish, but I don’t speak it well.

Answer: Hablo español, pero no lo hablo bien.
Not correct. Please try again.

Do you study? Do you work?

Answer: ¿Estudias? ¿Trabajas?
Not correct. Please try again.

I study.

Answer: Estudio.
Not correct. Please try again.

What do you study?

Answer: ¿Qué estudias?
Not correct. Please try again.

I study Italian. And you?

Answer: Estudio italiano. ¿Y tu?
Not correct. Please try again.

I don’t study and I don’t work.

Answer: No estudio y no trabajo.
Not correct. Please try again.

Okay, I love you anyway.

Answer: Está bien, te quiero de todos modos.
Not correct. Please try again.
